INTRODUCTION:

I began this page with a focus on Scriptural references with regards to the practice of fasting. However, as I began to learn more, I found a good deal of secular information that supports the practice of fasting.

Scripture References:

9And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: (KJV)

In this verse Jezebel was using a fast to proclaim a solemn event that she intended to use against Naboth.

12They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. (KJV)

In this verse Jezebel was using a fast to proclaim a solemn event that she intended to use against Naboth.

27And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. (KJV)

Ahab was using fasting to try to get forgiveness for the curse that was put upon him.

3Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours.

This verse seems to indicate that fasting is NOT the same as afflicting our soul.

4Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.

5Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

6Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

7Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?(KJV)

6Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD's house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.(KJV)

9And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.(KJV)

6Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of musick brought before him: and his sleep went from him. (KJV)

5'So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.'

6'For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.'

7'And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:'

8'But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.'

5'Speak unto all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying, When ye fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh month, even those seventy years, did ye at all fast unto me, even to me?'

6'And when ye did eat, and when ye did drink, did not ye eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?'

19'Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth, shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness, and cheerful feasts; therefore love the truth and peace.'

Beit Yahudah (H) - House Of Judah

21Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.(KJV)

22For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.(KJV)

23So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.(KJV)

I have read where fasting increases the 'power' of prayer. Here the people are fasting before asking for guidance.
