Introduction:

The purpose of this page is to document Scriptural references that relate to the importance of 'keeping' or observing the Sabbath.

I am also collecting references that detail the instructions and restrictions required to properly observe the Sabbath.

Sabbath/Shabath/Shabbat (H7676) - intensive from 'shabath' (7673); intermission, i.e (specifically) the Sabbath:--(+ every) sabbath.; (H) - to rest, cease {7673} (notes data page); (G4521) - of Hebrew origin (shabbath H7676); the Sabbath (i.e. Shabbath), or day of weekly repose from secular avocations (also the observance or institution itself); by extension, a se'nnight, i.e. the interval between two Sabbaths; likewise the plural in all the above applications:--sabbath (day), week.

Blessed And Sanctified:

KJV Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Did you know that there is not another scripture in the Bible that uses the words "Blessed" and "Hallowed" in the same sentence except the one for the Sabbath?

What does Blessed and Hallowed mean in the Concordance?

BLESSED -Strong's Hebrew #1288

Strong's Hebrew Lexicon Search Results

By Strong's Concordance (Back to Root Words)

God has asked us to:

  • sanctify
  • observe and keep the holy Sabbath
  • ceremonially or morally and
  • dedicate this day appoint(ed) by God and
  • praise Him abundantly
  • altogether
  • kneel(ing)
  • to greatly thank Him and
  • Bless God and
  • He indeed blesses man for keeping His Sabbath.

If we don't keep the Sabbath, we:

  • commit treason,
  • curse God (and vice versa) by euphemism blaspheme and indeed defile the Sabbath greatly.

In Genesis, God blessed and sanctified the 7th day.

KJV Genesis 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

SANCTIFIED - Strongs Hebrew #6942

Strong's Hebrew Lexicon Search Result

6942 qadash kaw-dash' a primitive root; to be (causatively, make, pronounce or observe as) clean (ceremonially or morally):--appoint, bid, consecrate, dedicate, defile, hallow, (be, keep) holy(-er, place), keep, prepare, proclaim, purify, sanctify(-ied one, self), X wholly.

When God Sanctified the 7th Day (Sabbath):

God caused to make and hallow(ed) the Sabbath and He pronounced, appoint(ed), dedicated, proclaimed, prepare(d) and purified the Sabbath to keep holy and not to defile the Sabbat.

Straight from the mouth of God, His Word, the Bible.

What are we commanded to do on the Sabbath?

3Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.

It is a day of rest.
We are to remember that in six days HE created the heavens and the earth
We are to have a holy convocation or set-apart miqra
We are to read Scripture

Scripture References:

2'And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.'

3And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

YHWH santified the seventh day.

23'And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.' (KJV)

Translation Difference

'And he said to them, "This is what YHWH has said, 'Tomorrow is a rest, a Sabbath set-apart to YHWH. That which you bake, bake; and that which you cook, cook. And lay up for yourselves all that is left over, to keep it until morning.'"' (Besorah)

In this verse Mosheh is instructing the people to cook and heat what is needed and what is left over is to be used on the Sabbath.

24'And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.'

25'And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.'

26'Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.'

27'And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none.'

28'And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?'

29'See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.'

YHWH is instructing us to stay in our place on the Sabbath. I think this means we are not to leave our homes. I need to compare this to HIS instructions for Passover when HE told us to stay in our homes. I think the Messiah traveled on the Sabbath. I need to check into this.

30'So the people rested on the seventh day.'

The weekly Sabbath is established using the availability of manna.

In this chapter, YHWH is using the availability of manna to teach the people the importance of the weekly Sabbath.
The seventh day of the week, the weekly Sabbath, was observed before the Ten Words were given on Mt. Sinai.

It is also a commandment at this point. The 4th commandment.

'...throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.' This seems pretty clear.

17'It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.'

The weekly Sabbath is established as a sign between YHWH and the children of Israel for ever.

The Sabbath is a holy day and no work is to be done on the Sabbath.

3'Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.'

The no fires restriction is detailed.

You shall not kindle a fire on the Sabbath.

Kindle means to start. Can we keep a fire going if it has already been started?

3'Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.'

No work is to be done on the weekly Sabbath.

The Sabbath is not a day to do as we want to.

23'And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.' (KJV)

Millennial Reign Sabbath
This verse is referring to ALL the people of the earth.

21'Thus saith the LORD; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem; '

(KJV)

This verse seems to support the idea that the Sabbath begins at sunset.

14'Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.' (KJV)
